What? what was that? Something called 'flauta control' at bomb digs? Hmm.. yes! What's on it you ask? Hell if I know.. it was two fried flour shells covering innards of Mexican cream cheese and chicken ... the outer bits were covered in red chili sauce and something that was greenish and crazy good.

Morning of facepalms..

I get to work in a fairly chipper mood to be gifted a high prio project regarding the main company website isn't rendering right. Awww shit... after some looking into it the twitter widget being used by marketing stopped responding.. no.. no.. actually that company's website has been nuked off the inter-webz. Well that blows. A bit of deft cutting to remove the widget and fill the space with carriage returns left the world right as rain.

The second facepalm came when an email showed up indicating the best way to remember passwords is in outlook's "note" option. Ah.. no.. no... NO! It's rare to hear six people groan at once but I kid you not - it happened. A few on our side.. and few down the tech support/network row...

Nothing but positive things today I tell you!

If anyone is concerned - no.. the old lady next door is alive. I had visual contact with the lady as her.. daughter and her daughter's kids were helping her out of the car and into the apartment.

MapReduce - read for later

In Lisp, a map takes as input a function and a sequence of values and applies the function to each value in the sequence.
A reduce takes as input a sequence of elements and combines all the elements using a binary operation (for example, it can use “+” to sum all the elements in the sequence).

MapReduce, inspired by these concepts, was developed as a method for writing processing algorithms for large amounts of raw data.

Josephus Problem

The Josephus Problem is always an amusing one. Fairly grizzly in nature... you line up N people in a circle and starting at the top you count off K number of people and then kill that person. You then repeat the K count from the next person over and eliminate that person from the group.. this continues until you are down to one person.

I forget sometimes people get asked for sequences on job interviews.. but damned if this didn't take me three minutes to knock out. Oh Probability and Combinatorics class - how I miss you!

'-- the Josephus Problem sequence
Dim listOfPeople As New List(Of Int32)

Dim lHowManyPeopleTotal As Int32 = 30
Dim lNthPerson As Int32 = 3

Dim location As Int32 = 0 '-- the temporary location to remove from the collection.

'-- fill our list with numbered people.
For i As Int32 = 1 To lHowManyPeopleTotal
listOfPeople.Add(i)
Next

lNthPerson -= 1 '-- remember the array list starts its index at 0

While listOfPeople.Count > 1 '-- run until there is only one item in the list left.
location += lNthPerson '-- from our current location add the number of steps we need to take.

While location >= listOfPeople.Count '-- if that number of steps is more than the items in the array wrap around.
location = location - listOfPeople.Count '-- this will happen frequently when when the # of steps is greater than the number of items.
End While

Console.WriteLine(listOfPeople(location)) '-- show what was removed
listOfPeople.RemoveAt(location) '-- remove it.
End While

Console.WriteLine("winner! " + listOfPeople(0).ToString) '-- show the winning spot!

This is disconcerting ..

I was masticating with an overly small grapefruit when I got a knock on my door.. I cautiously get up and peer through hole and see a guy on the phone near the stairs.. Figuring what the hell I pop open the door and ask him "what's up?". It seems he is the son of the old lady next to me and she isn't responding to him knocking, her car hasn't moved in a few days, and her doctor's office said she missed a few appointments.. oh and the key he has doesn't work. Well fuck. I get the number to the night security/emergency guy and thankfully he answered. He should be on his way to opening the door to see if the old lady is there and kicking. Hmm... this might get three ways of creepy in an hour.
